These past few days have seen the M2 MacBook Air go out to customers who placed pre-orders for the product, and iFixit, a company that sells repair materials, is one of the companies that has received a unit. If you have been following the work that iFixit has been doing after other Apple releases over the past few years, you know what this means: it is time for a deconstruction.

The MacBook Air, much like its predecessor, the 24-inch iMac, is mainly comprised of… a significant amount of space. The battery takes up the majority of space within the gadget. Still, other than that, we are primarily only looking at the mechanics for the trackpad, keyboard, and tiny circuit board.

The disassembly revealed that there was graphite tape and thermal paste, but there was no active cooling, and there wasn’t even a heat spreader. According to iFixit, the machine is likely going to run hot, which is something that we discovered when we throttled it.

Aside from that, things are operating more or less generally for Apple laptops inside of there. However, iFixit reports that rather than having an Intel-made Thunderbolt 3 driver, it appears to have one that Apple manufactured. This is an exciting development. There is also something called an accelerometer. However, it is not entirely apparent what function this particular component serves in the laptop.

iFixit got a look at the new speaker system featured in the M2 MacBook Air, which features a different speaker design than its predecessor. Instead of having perforated speakers on either side of the keyboard like previous Air models had, the new model has tiny slots cut into the casing between the display and the container. This allows sound to be output. iFixit also mentions that the speakers appear to be on the “small” side.

These breakdown articles and videos mainly evaluate the item’s potential for repair. There are some encouraging indicators here: For instance, you will only need to turn four screws to access the internal compartment of the device. However, there is still an arduous process of pulling and pulling at the beginning, and you must handle it cautiously.
